Choices Determine Character

Scarf + White Tee + Camel Coat: J.Crew; Boyfriend Jeans: Rag + Bone; Mule Sandals: Cole Haan; Sunglasses: Ray Ban

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big television. Choose no television. Choose washing machines, buying a car, listening to music, and electric can openers (wait what?) Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose going to the gym. Choose fixed-interest mortgage payments. Choose renting. Choose to buy a “starter" home. Choose buying a mansion with money you do not have yet. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suit. Choose a T-Shirt. Choose to DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing/spirit-crushing shows. Choose chain smoking. Choose eating junk food. Choose to rot away. Choose to exist. Choose your future. Choose your life.

What have you been choosing lately?

I am free, and when I said that I was me

Flannel: A+F (what?) Necklace: J.Crew, Tank: Dimepiece, Skirt: BCBG, Booties: Sam + Libby

Been a while, have you missed me? I know I missed you. Sometimes life is like that - pressing events occur and take up all your time and energy making it so there is none left to focus on much else. The month of March was wow, a pretty salacious one. I'm still getting over it! I moved again, quit my job, had mid-terms, everyone I know in California came to visit, I went to Colombia, joined the board of a non-profit and somehow I am still alive. But this isn't my diary, this is kellmenow and I'm back with a brand new lay out.. What do you think?!

Change is good. Change is constant but I feel like I've had enough change for at least 365 days. Yes I've grown as an individual, but I'm looking forward to completing my first year of graduate school (how did this happen) + landing a new position + enjoying a nice NYC summa.. Rose on Sundays. Ya dig?

XOXO

For apparent reasons, or none at all, people get continually hung up on the "Rules of Fashion". Which I find inconsequential, my only rule is that there are no rules. Wear what you like, wear it where you want. It's obvious when something is worn as a trend and not a form of self expression. That's not to say self expression cannot correlate with trends, but trends should never be a pillar of personal style (unless you're LADY GAGA). My style pillars:

  1. HEELS: I'm 5'9", most would gawk and say how ridiculous that I wear height enhancing shoes, to those people: I like to highlight my best assets, not hide them. Chunky heels, wedges, really any sort of platform elevating footwear. The edgier the better, my current favorite are these studded espadrilles by Marc Jacobs. Patent leather and studs? Does life get any better? Maybe, but only by a small margin.
  2. STUDS
  3. SKULLS

SKIRTS OVER JEANS ARE TOTALLY IN BECAUSE I SAID SO

Sunglasses: D&G; Blouse: J.Crew Haberdashery; Jeans: Paige Denim; Skirt: Burberry; Sandals: Steve Madden (Thanks @RachelThompson!) All photos by: Laura Damian

Woke up this morning in a conundrum "I really want to wear my Burberry skirt to work, but it's way too short." I think leggings under skirts are so 2010, I find tights to be incredibly uncomfortable/ugly/abhorrent and frankly innate, why don't you just wear pants? Then it came to me. Why don't I just wear pants? Jeans with holes paired with the classically preppy Burberry plaid and 'Kelly Green' J.Crew? Don't mind if I do.

The outfit is more autumn than spring so I had to pair it with nude strappy sandals to bring it back from the foliage. A very special thanks to Rachel Thompson for completely outdoing herself yet again and sending me these sandals and inadvertently making this outfit possible.

Take away message: SKIRTS OVER JEANS ARE TOTALLY IN BECAUSE I SAID SO
